Hundreds of Native Trees Added to Brooklyn’s Prospect Park

By BK Reader Staff | Brooklyn Reader

Brooklyn volunteers and community groups came together in Prospect Park on Oct. 4 to plant hundreds of native trees and plants as part of City of Forest Day, a citywide effort to raise awareness and celebrate New York City’s urban forest.

About 60 volunteers gathered to plant nearly 400 native trees and shrubs to enhance the park’s tree canopy. The planting took place at Fallkill Trail, one of the five scenic nature trails in Prospect Park Alliance’s newly launched formalized trail system.

“New York City’s urban forest, including Prospect Park’s 30,000+ trees, is a true lifeline for our community and a vital habitat for wildlife,” said Prospect Park Alliance President Morgan Monaco. “In the face of climate change, it is more essential than ever to celebrate our urban forest and to do our part to sustain our hardworking trees, which improve air quality, cool our earth and make our communities happier and healthier.”
